Summer Packet 2020

TO ACCESS THE FULL BLOG ON YOUR PHONE, SCROLL DOWN TO THE BOTTOM OF THE PAGE AND CLICK ON "VIEW WEB VERSION"

Previously, in non-pandemic times, the second day of class in Pre-Calculus was spent taking the Pre-Req test. This test assessed your Algebra skill level and would count for 50 points. In the past, students were assigned Summer work that would help them to prepare.

This Summer is different. This work is optional, and the Pre-Req test will not be given once the school year starts.

However, math is a language, and it's best if it can be used regularly. For that reason alone, spending time with the Pre-Req material posted to the left will be a beneficial thing to do if you are able to.

Please email me if you have any questions.
Stay safe and healthy, and see you in the Fall!

Online Learning

Please make sure to read the email I sent on Monday outlining how we will move forward as we learn our next unit - Conic Sections. Although this blog has video tutorials, power points, and keys that focus on Conic Sections, I believe that trying to learn in this way without any in-class time would be too difficult and frustrating. I spent a lot of time looking at different options, and chose to set up a classroom within Khan Academy. Many of you have already started! Please pace yourselves. I will upload the assignment for next week at the end of this week. Each week's assignments will be due on Sunday. I have updated our pacing guide to reflect our current reality. Please email me with any initial questions or concerns. I'll get back with you quickly. I will also be setting up regular times when my different classes may contact me virtually (probably through Google Meet). I'll communicate that schedule soon through this blog and school email.

Stay safe and well.

College Credit!

Registration for College Algebra credit through UMSL will occur between Jan 3rd - Feb 2nd. Before paying for your college credit, please check (either online or on-phone) that it will transfer to the college of your choice. The cost of this three credit course is $204 (compared to $1080 if taken at UMSL). This course will transfer to the college of your choice as if you had taken it on UMSL's campus.
We will register as a class during class time at the beginning of several classes in January. Students will  need a parent email, and have their social security # memorized.  Students must have at least a 2.5 cumulative GPA to be eligible to earn these college credits.

Please spend time this month starting to think about possible college majors. At Mizzou, as well as at most traditional universities, College Algebra is a required math course for graduation. Looking into the requirements of possible majors would be worthy of your time.

Please also spend time this month considering all options for college. St Louis Community College is a wonderful way to earn your general credits for the first two years, then transfer to the college of your choice (and earn great transfer scholarships!). Students in the A+ program can receive half of their college credits for free, while other students may qualify for a Federal Grant that does not need to be paid back. Please make sure to fill out a FAFSA form to see if you qualify for free Grants (or Federal Loans).
