Chapter 4 Test!

The Chapter 4 Test is lengthy and demanding. Please make sure to have completed the following before the morning of the test (All paper assignments will need to be turned in the day of the test).
Catching up on all of your Ch 4 assignments, doing the chapter 4 review (and checking your answers), plus watching any necessary tutorials (the 4.1-4.4 Review Tutorial is a good refresher), will set you up for success. Making a study schedule (and sticking to it) will help. Finish this semester strong!!

Want to Ace the Ch 2 Test?

Step 1: Make sure that all of your WebAssign HW is complete!
Step 2: Complete the Ch 2 Test Review  and self-grade  (due the day of the test)
Step 3: Use the matching "game" to quiz yourself over vocab
Step 4: Use the Markerboard Review as a second review. Self grade.
Step 5: Re-do the Ch 2 Test Review and re-self-grade (Blank copy is on blog)
Step 6: Spread your studying out evenly over the next 48 hours.
Step 7: Work in concentrated bursts of 20 minutes, then break for 10. Repeat.

It goes without saying that your frenemy is NOT invited to your study sessions.
Keep ALL distractions away for your 20 minute bursts. You can reconnect with your distractions during your ten minute break.
Please try to get a good night sleep the night before, and eat some carbs the morning of (your brain runs on carbs)
Why not give this plan a try?
See what you are capable of when you decide to commit to something.

If you have been having difficulty with WebAssign, hang in there. I really believe that it will get better :)

However, if you were not able to submit a Chapter 1 WebAssign assignment (for whatever technical reason), please complete that assignment below, using either the online text or your textbook (complete the problems on paper). All paper HW will be due by the day of the Chapter 1 test. No late HW will be accepted. (If you were able to complete all of your assignments on WebAssign, then this does NOT apply to you.)

WebAssign

We will be using WebAssign for our Pre-Calc online homework assignments. Many universities use this platform for course work, so it will be great to get experience while still in high school :)

To sign up, go to:  https://www.webassign.com/

Click on Enter Class Key

Enter (just copy and paste): 2nd block: pkwynorth.mo 6388 2607

Please put your parkway email in as your email, then click Create Account

That's it!

Pre-Req Retakes

When getting your Pre-Req test back, please write down the problem # of each missed problem, on an index card, or notebook paper.

Students that qualified for test corrections can complete their test corrections in lab.

Students needing to retake can practice their missed problems by referring to the 3 practice tests, as well as the extra pre-req work link. When you are ready to retake (and can show evidence of sufficient prep), you may retake during lab.

Pre-Req test grades will be put in at 5 weeks. In this way, an "M" will go into Infinite Campus a week before the end of 6-week grades as a reminder :)

Pre-Req Work for 2017-18 Students

Thank you to the many students who emailed with questions about the summer work (getting ready for the pre-req test). Here are the important things to know:

1. If you are accessing our blog on your phone, please scroll down to the bottom of the page and click on view web version.  Doing so will allow you to see the full blog, where you will find  the pre-req prep on the top left.

2. I will NOT be collecting any work that you do (or don't do!), as far as pre-req prep goes. Some students may need just a quick review, while others will need to watch the video tutorial and do all three practice tests in order to be ready. Know thyself.

3. Some students are reporting that they were not told about this at the end of last year. If you are one of these students, please know that it will all be okay. Out of the 20 questions on the pre-req test, 16 are from Algebra 1 and only 4 are from Algebra 2. There's still plenty of time to prepare and be ready to ace the test.

4. Why start the year with a pre-req test (on the second day of class)?  The majority of  past Pre-Calc students fly through this test and start off their semester with high "A" grades. The few who do not will receive extra support right away so that they can find success in Pre-Calc.

Hope that helped.

See you soon!

Goodbye and Hello

As we are saying goodbye to our wonderful seniors today, it's the perfect time to say "hello" to all of my future Pre-Calc students!

I look forward to the learning that we will accomplish and the college credit that many of you will receive from your hard work in this class (more on that, later!).

We will start our 2017-18 year with a Pre-Req TEST on the 2nd class of school. Please take the time to visit the Pre-Req section to the left of this post, and spend the appropriate time before school begins to make sure that you arrive "good-to-go" on day one.

We'll spend the first class doing mini marker board practice. Please arrive prepared.

See you in August!

A Sublanguage Within The Universal Language of Mathematics

Conics have their own language, their own nuances, their own particulars.
And what are conics anyways??? They will be our focus in the two weeks
leading up to our Spring Break. There are four of them, by the way. Four
different types of Conics, each begging to be known, each requiring from us
some memorization and some willingness to think flexibly.

Sounds like good practice for most anything in life - an understanding of truths
and a willingness to use them in ways to solve problems and expand our minds.

So here's to the next two weeks with Conics :)
We are so fortunate to be able to spend our time being challenged by and
improved from our time with them.

ABSENT?

If you absolutely must be absent, please try a new resource to help you keep up.
After checking the 2nd semester pacing guide (look above!) to find the material taught and the assignment given on the day you were absent, click on a quick (2 to 5 minutes) tutorial from the people who make our Pre-Calc book, before starting your Chapter 3 assignment.
